Scan Preparation!

Enjoy this video I made for you demonstrating how I use Photoshop process scanned comic-book line art to get it ready for lettering and colouring and generally Being A Real Comic Book.

Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

  1. Sucking rough blue sketches out from underneath clean black line art
  2. Knocking out line art to give it transparent negative space (more useful than simply setting a line-art layer to the “Multiply” blend mode)
  3. Adding tidy-but-not-too-clean panel borders
Heads up! There’s FREE INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING today at inprnt.com, which means that for today only, I am wrong about the expensive int’l shipping fees I was telling everyone about at VanCAF. Go get one or more of your favourite Delilah Dirk Travel Posters!

Update: Miss the free int’l shipping? Apparently I was under-informed: int’l rates have been lowered - as low as $15 USD, which is a big improvement. Thanks, INPRNT!

On May 24th and 25th, I’ll be at the Vancouver Comic Arts Festival! I was also lucky enough to be invited to design this year’s poster, as seen above. This is super exciting!
Anyway, come by and check it out. It’s held at Vancouver’s beautiful Roundhouse community centre, and it’s 100% free admission. I look forward to seeing you there! Full information is right over here.

The piece of beautifully rendered art you see above was created by Katie Shanahan. I spent pretty much all of the ECCC weekend exhibiting and hanging out with her and her brother, Mr Steven “Shaggy” Shanahan, and it was a blast. The Shanahans siblings are so kind they put a Delilah Dirk cover on this ECCC exhibitor map, but totally left out any of their own comics. What?
Together they make the comics Shrub Monkeys and Silly Kingdom, and they are each well worth your time. Silly Kingdom 2 will, I believe, be ready for TCAF! Meanwhile, I can prove Shrub Monkeys is a big deal because it is mentioned in the dictionary.

Emerald City Comic Con

Were you aware of it? I am exhibiting at good ol’ ECCC! You can find me at table 308, right next to the Dark Horse booth, sharing a table with Toronto’s most charming cartoonists, Katie and Steven Shanahan,

What do I have for you? SMILES. MANY SMILES. And dedicated copies of The Turkish Lieutenant, as well as travel poster prints. It’s the only place you need to go (as long as the only thing you want to buy is Delilah Dirk and the Turkish Lieutenant).
